AROUND THE WORLD IN A SUBMARINE – A travelling puppet theatre adventure for the whole family into the depths of the sea!

The year is 1866, and a strange vessel travelling beneath the surface swallows up three castaway sailors into its depths. Aboard the submarine Nautilus, the trio embark on a thrilling underwater adventure from tropical coral forests all the way to the ice fields of the South Pole. As oxygen runs low, the pressure to return home mounts, and alongside the perils of the deep, they also encounter the mysterious Captain Nemo, who is at the helm of the vessel.
This visually inventive puppet theatre adventure captivates with its imaginative realisation. The nostalgic art style is combined with lively puppet characters, unusual visual effects and a touch of steampunk spirit. Drawing inspiration from Jules Verne’s science fiction classic, the production is aimed at theatregoers—young at heart or in body—who love adventure stories, underwater experiences and the thrill of being in a confined space.
*Around the World in a Submarine* is an adventure novel published in 1869 by Jules Verne, a pioneer of science fiction. The book was written at a time when a submarine was pure science fiction, yet the appeal of its adventures has endured for several generations.

TEHDAS TEATTERI is an independent professional theatre company based in Turku, founded in 2000, and the leading venue for contemporary Finnish puppet theatre. Tehdas serves as a platform for open-minded theatrical innovations and ambitiously supports professional artists and working groups who approach their work with a spirit of exploration and experimentation. Tehdas Teatteri has been closely involved in the emergence of the ‘Turku puppet theatre phenomenon’ and is committed to supporting the development of puppet theatre as an art form.
The creative team behind the production brings together experienced pioneers and superstars of Turku’s puppet theatre scene – Merja Pöyhönen and Timo Väntsi – with newer talent, marking, amongst other things, the stunning professional puppet theatre debut of its director, Eve Mäkitalo!
