MARU – Stories Beyond Words

MARU – Stories Beyond Words is an audiovisual concert piece in which live guitar music, moving images and light come together to form a wordless story. At the heart of the work are musician and composer Maru Grönroos’s own compositions and the warm, delicate sound of the nylon-string guitar.

The music draws inspiration from northern nature, the changing seasons and the human experience: longing, change, comfort and hope. Projected images complement the music, evoking landscapes and moods in which the listener can discover their own memories and meanings.

The performance, lasting approximately 40–50 minutes, forms a cohesive whole created in collaboration with the director and the visual designer. Music, imagery, light and silence drive the work forward, whilst subtle theatrical elements deepen its atmosphere. MARU’s own musical expression and presence remain at the heart of the work.

The aim of the performance is to create a space for reflection and shared experience — a performance that gives free rein to the imagination and resonates across linguistic boundaries.

Technical requirements

I will bring my guitar and the performance’s image and video material with me. The performance requires a sound system suitable for the venue and audience size, a projector, a screen or other suitable projection surface, and subdued stage lighting. The performer also has their own sound system, which is well-suited to smaller venues. Arrangements for the equipment, playback device and necessary connections, as well as any technical assistance, must be agreed with the client in advance. The client must provide a power supply and access to the venue well in advance of the performance to allow for the set-up of technical equipment and the testing of sound and visuals
