Muoviamo ry, Raylab Oy
Helsinki, Uusimaa
Muoviamo is a creative circular economy test laboratory where waste plastic is transformed into new products and community artworks through art and design. In the workshops, the circular economy is made tangible through the creative processing of waste plastic. Participants learn about the life cycle of materials, types of plastic and reuse. The workshops involve designing and manufacturing decorative and functional objects, works of art and prototypes. Often, materials collected by the participants themselves are used, linking the work directly to their own environment. The process stimulates discussion about consumption habits and sustainable choices.
The workshops are flexible: they can be held at the client's premises, in our mobile plastic laboratory in Otaniemi, or by bringing the mobile laboratory (a 13-metre trailer) to the client. The laboratory contains all the tools and equipment needed for creative plastic processing.
Thousands of participants have taken part in Muoviamo's activities. We have held workshops for primary schools, secondary schools, universities and special groups. People of different ages and backgrounds from the city have worked in the open workshops.
The activities are suitable for many different groups: children, young people, families, seniors, people with special needs and multilingual groups. The same methods can also be used in work communities and organisations. The activities are tailored to the needs of each group, ranging from short trials to longer programmes.

We run Take plastic into your own hands workshops for 1st and 2nd graders as part of the City of Espoo's KULPS cultural path and for 4th and 5th graders as part of the Vantaa cultural education plan (KOPS). In the workshop, waste plastic is transformed into art and functional objects in the hands of the students. At the same time, they learn about the life cycle of plastic, its reuse and the importance of sorting. The workshops are held on school premises and support the sustainable development and cultural education goals of Espoo and Vantaa.
We organised the Plastic Journey workshop as part of Espoo's Future Stories project in the courtyard of the WeeGee Exhibition Centre. Participants transformed waste plastic they had collected themselves into art and functional objects in our mobile plastic lab. A similar project is being prepared for implementation in Helsinki. We partnered with the City of Espoo in the ERDF project All Plastic Circulates – Regional Trials in Practice, in which we developed and implemented a plastic workshop open to everyone. The concept, piloted at the Kera halls, offered more than 200 visitors practical experience of the possibilities of recycled plastic and supported the project's objectives of plastic circulation, increasing material knowledge and developing new circular economy solutions.
In a circular economy design project carried out with Restaurant Nolla, Muoviamo designed branded cutlery for the restaurant from Nolla's own plastic waste in collaboration with TELMA students from the Liven Vocational College. The project serves as a concrete example of the local circular economy.
