Children’s play: The Real Princess

Children’s play
The Real Princess

All is well in the kingdom. Except that, despite the Queen Mother’s fervent wishes, Prince Timo has still not found himself a princess to marry. But miracles do happen, and they certainly did in those legendary times of princes and princesses; and so, in the midst of a thunderstorm, Kyllikki from Pori, soaked to the skin, appears to knock on the castle door. But is Kyllikki – with her impossibly blunt manner and her pirouettes that seem to spring up out of nowhere – this long-awaited true princess?
There is only one solution to this tricky question: THE PEA TEST! Only a true princess can feel the pea hidden beneath 20 down duvets by the Queen.
How will Kyllikki’s night with the pea go, and what does Timo – who values his freedom – make of all this, and especially of getting married?
*The Real Princess* offers a warm and humorous take on prejudice, being true to oneself, challenging external expectations, and the question of who ultimately gets to define what is right and genuine. In the Joensuu Theatre’s version, delightful songs and music enrich the narrative, and the production offers something to marvelling at not only for children but also for adults.
