IN MEMORY OF AGASIAS, THE DONKEY
IN MEMORY OF AGASIAS, THE DONKEY
A performance about ostracism, silence, and a forgotten donkey. The interactive performance In Memory of Agasias, the Donkey takes its point of departure from the ancient legal practice of ostracism. The democratic society of Athens was fragile. As a safeguard, citizens were given the opportunity to banish anyone perceived as a threat. But the power to vote someone out could also be abused.
In Memory of Agasias, the Donkey turns its attention to questions of exclusion and silence. The performance moves between intimate relationships and wider social structures, tracing moments of distance between children and parents, friends and classmates, and communities at large.
