A day with a magician in the local area: nursery, school, library
SHORT DESCRIPTION:
One performer, one day, one invoice. In the morning, a magic show at the nursery focusing on social skills; in the afternoon, a magic show at the school encouraging reading; in the evening at the library, either a magic show for the whole family or a performance encouraging reading, at the library’s discretion. Nursery-age children, primary school pupils and families all on the same day.
DESCRIPTION:
The local authority’s education or cultural services department is responsible for nurseries, schools and libraries at the same time. The ‘Magician in the Community’ day is designed for this purpose: three performances for three different audiences with a single booking, without the need for three separate bookings.
The day is suitable for children’s culture weeks, reading weeks, as part of the local authority’s cultural education plan, or as a one-off children’s culture day.
PROGRAMME FOR THE DAY (Example)
9.30 am DAY NURSERY ‘Friendship Skills’ experience, 30 mins, or a special 20-minute version for the little ones (recommended age 1–2 years).
10.15 am NURSERY, ADDITIONAL PERFORMANCE Performance 2, if there are more than 60 children. The youngest and oldest children watch separately.
12.15 SCHOOL A magic show encouraging reading, 30 mins.
13.00 SCHOOL, ADDITIONAL PERFORMANCE Performance 2, if there are more than 200 pupils. For example, Years 1–3 and Years 4–6 separately.
6.00 pm LIBRARY A magic show for the whole family or a magic show encouraging reading, 30 mins. The library chooses.
Times to be agreed in accordance with the local authority’s schedule.
MORNING: FRIENDSHIP SKILLS EXPERIENCE AT THE NURSERY
A 30-minute story-based magic show for 1–6-year-olds, addressing friendship skills and the prevention of bullying in language children can understand: getting to know one another, diversity, playing by the rules and including everyone in the game. The children learn three friendship rhymes, which are left with the groups as posters. The show is suitable for groups of up to 60 children. Staff receive instructions in advance and, after the show, follow-up material to continue exploring the theme within the group.

AFTERNOON: A MAGIC SHOW TO ENCOURAGE READING IN SCHOOLS
A 30-minute narrative magic show for primary schools, in which the use of the library, borrowing books and the benefits of reading are highlighted through humour. Suitable for Years 1 to 6. The library next to Jupper School in Espoo was busier than usual immediately after the show. The school receives a book list with reading recommendations. The show is also available in English.

EVENING: MAGIC SHOW AT THE LIBRARY
A 30-minute performance for families with children at a library or other local authority venue. The library chooses from two options: a family-friendly magic show with no specific theme, in which a few children get to take part, or a magic show designed to encourage reading, if the evening is to tie in with the library’s own reading theme. The library will receive a book list and can set aside the books on the list in advance for the children to borrow on the day of the show. The evening also attracts families to the library who would not otherwise visit, and is ideal as part of the programme for opening ceremonies, Children’s Culture Week or a themed library evening.

Technical requirements
1. The names and email addresses of the contact persons at the nursery, school and library. I will send each of them a booking confirmation containing the practical details for the day, and I will keep a copy for the local authority.2. At each venue, a space of at least 2 x 3 metres with no obstructions, and a power socket. I will bring my own sound system, table and backdrop.
3. That’s all. I’ll sort out the practical arrangements directly with the organisations; I’ll arrive at each venue 45 minutes before the performance and take my time setting up, which takes about 30 minutes. After the performance, I will send the organiser a summary of feedback.
