Joensuu City Theatre, over 100 years old / The North Karelia Regional Theatre is the region’s most significant and experienced professional theatre, run by a registered association known as the North Karelia Theatre Association.
The Joensuu City Theatre’s programme is rooted in a strong sense of Finnish identity and pays tribute to the North Karelian heritage, whilst not forgetting the classics.
Joensuu City Theatre is housed in Joensuu’s old town hall, designed by Eliel Saarinen, right in the city centre. We stage performances on two stages – the main stage and the small stage – and we can also organise private performances on these stages. In addition, you can book touring productions from our current repertoire – for children, young people, adults and the elderly – to be staged at your own premises, such as those of associations and workplaces, schools, nurseries, care homes, community and event centres, and at various events, etc. We also organise, amongst other things, meet-the-artist sessions, backstage tours and exhibitions. A visit to our theatre can be combined with a visit to the restaurant or museum, as all three are conveniently located under one roof.
Each year, the theatre stages around 12 productions and nearly 200 performances. We welcome around 18,000–25,000 visitors each year.
