Ulrika Bengts

Helsinki, Uusimaa

I am a film and theatre director, screenwriter, dramaturge and film and theatre educator. After graduating in film directing from the Dramatic Institute (now Stockholm University of the Arts) in 1989, I have directed over 30 film and TV productions, for which I have often also written the screenplay. In addition, I have directed 13 theatre productions and 10 radio plays. Between 2005 and 2007, I attended the Theatre Academy in Helsinki's continuing education programme in theatre directing and dramaturgy. I have also participated in international workshops to enhance my skills, such as the Nordic Film and TV Fund's Nordic Genre Boost (2017) and the Helsinki International Film Festival's New Nordic Narratives (2022). In 2020–2021, I was employed as a dramaturg at Svenska Yle Drama. I have taught at all Finnish-Swedish film schools (Arcada, the Art School in Nykarleby and Cityfolkhögskolan) as well as at the Theatre Academy and Novia Scenkonst. I also hold master classes in film directing and basic courses in film acting for those who are interested. In addition, I have been a columnist for Ny Tid and Hufvudstadsbladet.

Customer references

My films include the award-winning feature films Iris (2011) and Lärjungen (2013), which have been screened at 30 and 50 international festivals respectively. Lärjungen was also Finland's Oscar candidate in 2014. Among my TV series, Lola uppochner (2016), based on Monika Fagerholm's novel, is worth mentioning. I also wrote the screenplay for Lola, in collaboration with Annina Enckell. I have also made many documentaries, such as my breakthrough film Riksväg åtta (1992) and the nationally and internationally acclaimed Nu är du Hamlet! (2002). I have made my films in collaboration with companies such as Jörn Donner Productions, Ab Talking Heads Oy, Kinoproduction, Fremantle, Yellow Film & TV and Långfilm Productions. Svenska Yle has been a consistent partner throughout my professional life and my films have often been made as Nordic collaborations. Many of the films have also been distributed outside the Nordic region, including in the United States and Latin America.
As a theatre director, I have worked at theatres such as Viirus, Svenska Teatern, Wasa Teater, Klockriketeatern and Teater Gården. The premiere of Susanne Ringell's De langerhandska öarna (2017) was produced by Klockriketeatern in collaboration with Nationalteatern and Dramaten, where the performance was also staged. My production of Margret Edson's play Wit (Vittra) at Svenska Teatern in 2008 was awarded the Finland-Swedish theatre prize, the Antonia Prize. As a theatre director, I also received the Stina Krook Foundation Prize in 2009. In 2014, I received the Swedish Cultural Foundation's Grand Prize.
