Tuomas Nikkanen

Pianist-composer who writes the lyrics to his own songs. Founded the Iittala Music Festival and currently serves as chair of the Finnish Kodaly Society and on the board of the Korvat-auki Society. Works as a freelance artist. Recorded a Sibelius CD at Sibelius's birthplace in Hämeenlinna and recorded Toivo Kuula's entire piano oeuvre (Lilith), which includes several archive finds.
He has composed piano music for F.W. Murna's film Nosferatu (2023) and piano works such as Waltz for Phuong (101 Days of Boyhood, 2022-24), the series Matka mielikuvitusmaahan (Journey to Imagination Land, 2022-24), the song cycles Neljä laulua Jeesuksesta (Four Songs about Jesus, 2021-22) and Ihmisyys (Humanity, 2022-) based on his own poems.
His solo repertoire includes a lot of Sibelius, Kuula, Ilmari Hannikainen and other Finnish Romantics, as well as music by Tauno Marttinen. In addition to the greats of the standard repertoire, such as J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and others, he also performs rare works, especially by early 20th-century composers such as Paul Juon, Jean Roger-Ducasse and Franz Schmidt.
Most recently, he has been playing and studying Schönberg and Alban Berg in particular.
