Raija Marttinen

Mikkeli, South Savo

As a visual artist, I am, at heart, a painter. My main techniques are acrylic and charcoal or pencil on canvas or board. I paint large canvases and draw on small panels. My recurring themes are time and memory; remembering and forgetting, and the layered nature of time and place. I also incorporate sewing into my painting, which allows the resulting works to be installed even in large public spaces. I also create three-dimensional works by sewing paper and by knitting with threads and fibres. The reuse and combination of works and materials is an important part of my practice.
