Hanna Kivioja

Hanna Kivioja is a dance artist, choreographer and educator working in Åland. She works in contemporary performing arts with a particular interest in improvisational processes in both creation and performance. In her artistry, she explores the intersections between different art forms and investigates how dance can expand beyond traditional performance spaces through site-specific and interactive formats.
Kivioja strives to create deeper contact between the audience and dance art, including through audience engagement and participatory and interactive performances that strengthen the audience's understanding of dance as an art form.
She works both as an independent artist and as a member of the performing arts collective URGRUND, as well as acting as a producer and initiator of cross-disciplinary productions and working groups.

Kivioja holds a master's degree in dance education from the University of the Arts Helsinki's Theatre Academy. Her productions have been selected five years in a row for the national programme Konsttestarna and two years in a row for Kulturkraft through the Nordic Institute in Åland, which enables professional art and cultural experiences for children and young people in school.
Her work has received support from the Centre for Art Promotion, the Swedish Cultural Foundation, the Åland Cultural Delegation, the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, the Nygrén Foundation, the City of Mariehamn and Konstsamfundet.
In addition to her artistic work, Kivioja is the activity coordinator for SKAPA Åland r.f. and runs the organisation's two main activities: the performing arts collective URGRUND and Kulturvillan in Mariehamn. She has solid experience in artistic management, project development and cultural production, as well as in working in long-term collaborations nationally and internationally.
As an educator, she leads dance and yoga courses and works with art education for different age groups.
